Preparation & Care

After your spray tan

  • Wear loose, dark clothing with sandals or thongs.

  • Keep skin completely dry, avoid water contact.

  • Do not apply any products over the developing tan.

  • Allow tan to develop for the required amount of time (timing as per your technician's recommendation). Avoid other beauty/hair treatments whilst tan is developing.

  • Avoid activities that make you perspire.

  • Stay as cool as possible as hot and/or sweaty skin will not allow the tan to develop and may result in a patchy tan.

After your tan has developed

  • Rinse off the colour guide bronzer (after the required amount of time) with warm water and your hands (do not use any soaps or products at this stage; you are just rinsing off the colour guide). Your tan will not be developed at this point so it is normal to go back to your original skin colour.

  • Do not wash your hair when you are rinsing off your spray tan as shampoos and conditioners can remove the spray tan and result in a streaky appearance.

  • Five to seven days after your spray tan, gently exfoliate your skin - repeat this every two days thereafter to ensure your tan fades evenly

  • Avoid products (body washes, shampoos, creams etc) that contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), toners, sulphates (SLSs) or oils as these can strip the colour from your spray tan.  Buy sulphate/SLS free.

  • Avoid swimming pools and the ocean as these will prematurely fade your tan

  • To prolong your tan, moisturise your skin daily (with a lotion or milk, not products heavy with oils).

Before Your Spray Tan

  • Exfoliate your skin 12–24 hours before your appointment. Use an exfoliating mitt or scrub to remove loose dead skin cells so your tan develops evenly and lasts longer. Avoid exfoliating on the day of your appointment, as this can remove some of the amino acids the tanning solution reacts with and may leave your skin irritated.

  • Shave or wax at least 24 hours before your appointment. If you must shave on the day, do so at least 3 hours before your appointment and rinse the area thoroughly with water afterwards to remove any shaving residue.

  • Moisturise well the night before your appointment. Well-hydrated skin helps your tan develop more evenly and last longer. Do not apply moisturiser again on the day of your appointment, as it can create a barrier that interferes with the tanning solution.

  • Shower the night before your appointment whenever possible. If you need to shower on the day, do so at least 3 hours before your appointment. Soap and body cleansers temporarily raise your skin's pH, and it can take several hours for your skin to return to its normal level. If your skin is too alkaline when your tan is applied, the tanning solution can react too quickly and produce a more orange-looking result. If you have an early morning appointment, we recommend not showering that morning.

  • Do not use any self-tanning products for at least one week before your appointment.

  • Do not wear make-up, deodorant, perfume, body oils or moisturiser on the day of your appointment. These products can leave a barrier on the skin, preventing the tanning solution from developing evenly. Many products are also alkaline and can temporarily raise your skin's pH.

  • Do not wear deodorant on the day of your appointment. Deodorant can react with the cosmetic guide colour (not the DHA), causing the underarms to temporarily turn green. This will wash away at your first shower after your tan has developed. If you accidentally wear deodorant, it can be removed at your appointment using baby wipes. Mitchum, Rexona Clinical Protection, Rexona Maximum Protection and other heavy antiperspirants are different. These products can leave aluminium residue on the skin for up to 48 hours, even after washing, which can completely block the tanning solution and leave white or very light patches under the arms. Please avoid these products for at least 48 hours before your appointment.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise immediately before your appointment. Sweating can cause the tanning solution to run and develop unevenly.

  • Arrive with completely dry skin and at a normal body temperature. Damp, sweaty or overheated skin can cause the tanning solution to run, resulting in patchy development.
